Unclaimed Property in PA: Search for Lost Checks, Bank Accounts and Insurance Money

You may have money waiting for you in Pennsylvania and not know it. State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski recently hosted an Unclaimed Property Week at his Plains Township office to help residents search for funds and submit claims at no cost.

Unclaimed property can include forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, utility deposits and other financial assets that have been turned over to the Pennsylvania Treasury’s Unclaimed Property program.

What counts as unclaimed property?

Unclaimed property is money or an asset that belongs to you but has had no owner activity for a legally defined period. It does not mean the government is giving out a new payment, it means an organization may have lost contact with the rightful owner.

Common examples include:

  • Forgotten bank accounts

  • Uncashed payroll checks, refund checks or dividend checks

  • Life-insurance proceeds

  • Utility-security deposits and customer refunds

  • Rebate payments and dormant investment accounts

How to search for money

Pennsylvania residents can search on their own at any time using the official PA unclaimed property search.

Search your own name, previous names, relatives’ names and the names of businesses or organizations you are authorized to represent. If you find a match, follow the site’s directions to file a claim and provide any required proof of identity or ownership.

The search and claims process is free. Never pay a third party just to check whether you have unclaimed money.

Get in-person help

Pashinski’s office offered in-person support from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the event, including help locating property and filing a claim. The event itself ran through Friday, but residents can still contact a state representative’s office for assistance or use the official online search at any time.

If you receive an unexpected letter, email or phone call about unclaimed funds, be cautious. The Pennsylvania Treasury does not require a payment to release property that belongs to you. Verify any outreach directly through the Pennsylvania Treasury before sharing personal information.
