How to Claim Your Unclaimed Property Checks in Arkansas

A new law in Arkansas aims to make it easier for residents to receive their unclaimed property checks.

Thanks to Senate Bill 14, the Auditor of State Dennis Milligan now has the authority to automatically mail checks to eligible individuals without requiring them to file a claim.
 

How the Data Match Initiative Works

The data match initiative streamlines the process of returning unclaimed funds. Under this system:

• The state identifies individuals with unclaimed property valued between $50 and $5,000.

• Checks are automatically mailed to qualifying individuals.

• The initiative helps eliminate bureaucratic hurdles, making it easier for residents to claim their funds.

According to Milligan, this initiative will return millions of dollars to Arkansans, helping rightful owners reclaim their money more efficiently.

How to Check for Unclaimed Property?

If your unclaimed property does not meet the automatic eligibility requirements, you can still search for and claim your funds through the Great Arkansas Treasure Hunt program. Here’s how:

1. Visit the official website – Check for unclaimed property at Arkansas Auditor of State’s website.

2. Search for your name – Enter your details to see if you have any unclaimed funds.

3. File a claim – If you find unclaimed money, follow the steps to submit a claim online.

4. Verify your identity – Provide necessary documents to prove ownership.

5. Receive your funds – Once approved, you’ll receive your payment.

What If You’re Claiming for a Deceased Relative or Business?

In cases where the rightful owner has passed away, or if a business has unclaimed property, you may still file a claim by providing:

• Proof of relationship or legal authority

• Business ownership documentation

• Required identification and verification documents

What Happens Next?

Once the data match process is fully implemented, Arkansas officials plan to return over $83 million in unclaimed property across 360,000 accounts.

If your property qualifies, you’ll receive a postal mail notification before your check is mailed.

Since January 2023, the state has returned over $70 million to citizens through the Great Arkansas Treasure Hunt program.
