Pennsylvania Sets Record for Unclaimed Property Returns in 2025

The Pennsylvania Treasury Department has announced a record-breaking year for returning unclaimed money, putting hundreds of millions of dollars back into the hands of residents.

According to Treasurer Stacy Garrity, the state returned $334.1 million in 2025, beating the previous record of $272.2 million set in 2024.

This milestone highlights a growing effort to reconnect people with money they may not even know they’re owed.

New Law Makes It Easier to Get Your Money

A major reason behind the surge in returned funds is a 2024 law that allows the state to automatically send payments for properties worth under $500.

  • Hundreds of thousands of checks have already been mailed

  • Tens of millions of dollars returned without residents needing to file claims

This proactive approach is making it easier than ever for people to recover what’s theirs.

Special Protection for Military Items

Not all property is treated the same. Items like Purple Hearts and military medals are never auctioned. Instead, they are carefully held until they can be returned to veterans or their families.

Billions Still Waiting to Be Claimed

Despite the record returns, the state is still holding over $5 billion in unclaimed property.

  • More than 1 in 10 residents may have money waiting

  • The average claim exceeds $1,000

How to Check and Claim Your Money

Residents can search for their unclaimed property through the official state website:

You typically need:

  • Your name and city

  • Proof of identity

  • Supporting documents (if required)
