Florida Woman Finds $180K: How to Claim Unclaimed Money in Michigan

Where Does Unclaimed Property Come From?

Unclaimed money and property can include:

  • Dormant bank accounts

  • Uncashed checks (including paychecks or refunds)

  • Contents of safe deposit boxes

  • Stock dividends or certificates

After a period of inactivity, these assets are turned over to the Michigan Department of Treasury, where they remain until the rightful owner claims them. Amounts can range anywhere from $50 to thousands of dollars.

 

How to Search for Unclaimed Property in Michigan

  1. Go to the Michigan Unclaimed Property website via the Department of Treasury.

  2. Click “Get Started” and enter your name.

  3. Review the list of property under your name and similar names.

If you’ve lived in other states, you can also search the national unclaimed property database.

 

How to Claim Your Property

  • Select the property you want to claim.

  • Provide identifying details such as your name, Social Security number, and address.

  • In some cases, that’s enough for approval. Other times, you may need to submit documents like a copy of your ID or Social Security card.

Once verified, the Michigan Treasury will mail you a check. You can also claim property by calling 517-636-5320.
